how to clean your water pump

A water pump is used to supply and remove water in residential and commercial applications. There are many types of water pumps with different functions, but one thing remains the same: A water pump should be clean and in good working condition at all times. Otherwise, you may end up with a big problem in your hands (and in your pipes).

Here is a quick guide on how to clean your water pump efficiently:

What you’ll need:

  • Washrag
  • Buckets of water
  • Pliers

To clean your water pump without causing more problems along the way, make sure to follow these steps carefully:

1. Prepare the work area:

Cleaning a water pump is a pretty quick and easy process. Nevertheless, make sure you clear the work area so nothing will get in the way.

2. Remove the pump cover:

Water pumps have different designs, like electrical submersible water pumps and centrifugal pumps, but they generally have a pump cover that protects the inside of the device. If the pump cover is sealed with screws, use the screwdriver to remove it. Otherwise, you can just take it off with your hands.

3. Loosen the impeller cap:

The next step is to loosen the impeller cap with pliers. If you’re not sure what an impeller cap looks like, check your user’s manual.

4. Start washing:

Now comes the most tedious part of the process, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. With a rag, clean each component one by one until there is no more debris clinging to the metal. To polish the impeller rod, use your steel wool and brush it in gentle strokes.

Avoid using soap to wash the inside of your water pump, especially if you are using it for drinking water because soap can leave a residue.

5. Return the impeller:

After you’re done watching the components of your water pump, reinstall them and make sure they are secure. Return the cap and tighten it. Use pliers if necessary.

6. Put the cover back:

Assemble the rest of the water pump, making sure that none of the components is loose. Put the cap back on and secure it with the screws, if applicable.

7. Test your water pump:

To see if your water pump is working correctly, use the buckets of water you’ve prepared earlier. You can also try using a hose to make sure the water is flowing in the right direction. If there are problems with the water flow, open up the pump again and see if you’ve reinstalled components in the wrong position.
